One Monday morning, in the very earliest days of my practice when I had few clients, and was convinced each time that there would never be another, I woke up and couldn't stand.
Or sit. Or lie down.
My back was in complete spasm from a weekend spent moving heavy things in awkward spaces; I could barely function, let alone think.
"I can't cancel!" I told myself. "I just have to sit there in a hard chair for two hours taking notes; I can do it. What if she fires me?"
Trying to get through breakfast, though, I asked myself two questions. One, was I in any shape to do good work for someone else? And two, is this the precedent I wanted to set for my practice?
I rescheduled.

And so it is that when I went down hard with a cold last week (yes, the homeopath gets sick and yes, it took me until last night to find a remedy to move this cough through, because I was trying to power it out without help), and cancelled everything, I couldn't even marshal my thoughts to write.
Which gave me time to reflect on the semi-annual latest greatest way to get us all fighting among ourselves even when we agree:
Daylight Savings Time!
Everyone hates the time change. And yet, we are hopelessly divided over which "time" to remain in - Standard Time, or Daylight Savings Time.
Just this morning someone tried to tell me that farmers need "that extra hour," and then told me I didn't know what I was talking about when I said I don't know any farmers who need the government to tell them whether it's time to go to work.
So I'm going to tell you what I think, and why, and why it matters to your health.

"The clock is fake anyway," we're told, "and clock time is an artificial construct." But is it? Time zones are a government creation, cooked up to make life easy for the rail companies, but telling time by the position of the sun is in our DNA; life on Earth requires the sun.
Measuring the seasons and the hours by standing stones and sundials almost certainly predates any record of such devices, but the oldest known sundials date from at least 3500 years ago.
To standardize time is an imposition, and one we need only to participate in if we want to interact effectively outside our immediate physical sphere, but it arises from the discovery that the sun is highest at the meridian, whether we say so or not.
To make a decree by fiat that the sun is NOT highest at the moment we call the meridian is as powerful an illustration as I can imagine of what happens when you start letting government bureaucrats tell you what reality you are allowed to experience.
Words matter. To force the clocks ahead is to call something expressly what it is not (ante-meridian and post-meridian).

So how does this relate to your health, you may be wondering. After all, don't we love the long evenings of a northern summer, and lament the pitch darkness at four pm in December?
For the most part, yes. So structure your time. And if that doesn't feel possible, let's explore why.

How have we come to the point where the fact that it is easier to farm in the daylight is an argument for changing the meaning of words (the not-really-meridian meridian)?
The same way we've come to the point where if the doctor tells you that there is nothing wrong with you just because the test says your fine,
or that there is no relationship between the different symptoms that are marking the progressive decline of your health,
or that your problem is a pharmaceutical deficiency, any side-effects of which can be remedied with more pharmaceuticals,
you are expected to accept their authority over your own intuition.
Your body knows when you are being lied to.
To get deep healing without drugs, to address core susceptibilities, to get off the medical merry-go-round, find a practitioner who listens first.

You inspired me to schedule differently. My daily calls will no longer be starting at 10am year round. They will change to later during daylight savings and earlier during standard. I’m not going to hurt myself nor encourage others to do so in order to keep an arbitrary work time if we are working for ourselves.
