At the beginning of a coaching series, I ask my clients to examine the past year in terms of five categories, or “buckets.” I think of them as the Domains of Health:
· Relationship with SELF, and with others
· Service/Purpose: what feels like heart-inspired work
· Income/Resources: sometimes this is the same as service, but sometimes it’s not, and that’s okay.
· Physical body, physical health
· Physical environment and household day-to-day logistics.
In my first post of the new year, I’d like to share a simple framework with you all for considering reflection and projection in terms of process, rather than outcomes. How can you simplify your life by understanding your unique best practices?
Decisions Big and Small
· In each domain, identify decisions over the past year (or prior, if the outcome was last year), large or small, where you can connect it to an outcome.
· Which decisions were “the easy way” and which ”the hard way”? To understand the easy/hard way framework, read this essay.
· What followed the decision, in terms of your life, your health, etc.?
· Now, identify, in your body, the feeling you get when you think about the outcomes. What feelings do you want more of?
· Once you have a few instances of that feeling, look at how you got to those decisions. Consider everything from where the opportunity came from, how you approached the process, to how you celebrated the outcome.
· In each category, identify the feeling you want to experience when you do this review next year.
· Consider some of these questions:
o When my head and my heart were in conflict, which way did I go? What was the outcome?
o When have I overriden my intuition?
o When have I been clear on the inner message, and when not?
o What is the timeline for me to make ”the easy way” decisions?
· Start recording decisions: was it a yes, did I know, did I act on it, was it a no, did I know, did I let it go?
· Play around with low-stakes decisions, like the direction you turn on a walk or the meal you choose on a menu.
· As you look ahead to your goals, what happens if you think in terms of how it feels to make the decisions, rather than being focused on the outcome.
